In order for any student to be considered for membership in the Woodland School National Junior Honor Society, he or she must have attended Woodland School the equivalent of one semester.  This is essential to provide the student time to establish themselves academically and involve themselves in areas of service and leadership within the school and community and provide the faculty the opportunity to get the student and the quality of the student’s character.  The only exception to these criteria for membership in the National Junior Honor Society would be in the case of children of those in the military who are required to move with their family when transferred. Pursuant to selection of children of transferred military personnel, the adviser must receive a recommendation for the student’s previous principal or counselor.  


The Faculty Council of the Woodland School National Junior Honor Society will select students who demonstrate outstanding performance in all five criteria of the NJHS~ scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character.


SCHOLARSHIP


Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is open to students in grade eight.  The minimum cumulative GPA allowable is 92% for membership in the Woodland School NJHS.  GPA is calculated based on the final  average from the entire 6th  and 7th grade year, using all 4 academic classes. In addition, the student cannot have earned a grade of a “D”, or equivalent, or below in any class as recorded on their report card. Even though special area classes are not calculated for the GPA, it does apply for the below “D” in any class criteria. 



LEADERSHIP

The Faculty Council recognizes the importance of leadership in all areas of school including holding office on Student Council, serving as leaders on committees and clubs within the school, being team leaders and captains on athletic teams, being section leaders in band and chorus. 

Students selected for membership in the Woodland School NJHS will exercise leadership:

  • Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities

  • Exercises positive influences on peers in upholding school ideals and spirit

  • Exemplifies positive attitudes

  • Inspires positive behavior in others

  • Demonstrates academic initiative

  • Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility

  • Demonstrates reliability and dependability

  • Is a leader in the classroom, at work, or in other school or community activities

  • Is dependable in any responsibility accepted


SERVICE


Service is considered those actions undertaken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or monetary compensation. Service is any contribution a candidate for the NJHS has made to the school, classmates, and community.

The students who serves:   

  • Volunteers and provides dependable and well-organized assistance, is gladly available, and is willing to sacrifice to offer assistance.  

  • Works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities

  • Cheerfully and enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school

  • Is willing to represent the class or school in interclass and interscholastic competition

  • Participates in some activity outside of school (Girl Scouts, Boys Scouts, religious groups, volunteer services)


  • Mentors other students in school or outside the school environment

  • Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students. 


Service should be a minimum of 4 hours per month.  Verification of such service by an adult supervisor must be provided in writing to the Faculty Council within the time frame designated by the Faculty Council. ****modified during covid


CITIZENSHIP



The student who demonstrates citizenship:

  • Understands the importance of civic involvement

  • Has a high regard for freedom and justice; respects the U.S. form of government (representative democracy); and respects the laws at the local, state, and federal level that protect that government

  • Demonstrates mature participation and responsibility though the involvement with activities such as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs. 


CHARACTER


“The NJHS supports and recommends the use of multifaceted definition of character known as the Six Pillars of Character.  A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.”                                   (NJHS Handbook, p. 29)


The student of character:

  • Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously

  • Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (e.g. cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability)

  • Cooperates by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, office, halls, etc.

  • Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability

  • Regularly shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others

  • Observes instructions and rules, is punctual, and faithful both inside and outside the classroom

  • Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing and unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others 

  • Actively helps rid the school of bad influences or environment


A potential candidate will be able to demonstrate an outstanding record of conduct and behavior with regard to school and community rules, guidelines, and policies or be able to demonstrate sufficient growth and improvement to compensate for previous inadequacies. The Faculty Council may consider the following as substandard performance in the area of the character criterion:

  • Administrative records of the school (no incident reports)

  • Counseling records from the guidance office

  • Conduct or behavior grades or ratings (including comments) on report cards

  • Detentions records of teachers and administrators (no central detentions should be noted or three or more teacher detentions)

  • Comments based on professional evaluation and action of individual faculty members on candidate evaluation forms. 


“Selection to the NJHS is a privilege, not a right. Students do not apply for membership in the NJHS. Instead they provide information to be used by the local selection committee to support their candidacy for membership. Membership is granted only to those students selected by the Faculty Council in each school on the condition of having met the standards for selection established at the local level and based on the provision of the national constitution.  This is not an election, nor is membership automatically conveyed simply because a student has achieved a specified level of academic performance.”
